Deadline September 1 | Call for Submissions for Volume 11: The Mom Egg

The theme for the 2013 Vol. 11 issue of The Mom Egg is MOTHER TONGUE.

Mothers and non-mothers are invited to submit works on the theme of Mother Tongue. Please interpret liberally—some examples: mothers’ talk, mother-like aspects of language or towards language, native tongue, dialect, politics of mother tongue, etc. Or perhaps the organ itself! Both experimental and traditional works are welcome. Please see below for specifics for submitting in each genre. Submissions period is June 1, 2012 to September 1, 2012. We will respond by January, 2013. Submissions are accepted online via Submittable.

POETRY: Please submit up to 5 poems in a single word or text document. Poems do not have to be on separate pages. Please put your name on the first page.

FICTION AND CREATIVE PROSE: Please submit one piece of 850 words or fewer, or several short-short pieces that total fewer than 850 words in all, in a single word or text document. Please put your name on the first page.

ART: Please submit up to five works of art (drawings, paintings, photos, etc.) that relate to the topic “Mother Tongue” in a .jpg file at 300 dpi. (The Mom Egg cover is color; interior art is black and white. If your art is selected, we will request a larger file.


Please include a cover letter with the title(s) of the works you are submitting and a brief (3-4 line) bio. If you are submitting for the first time, you may note how you heard of our publication. One submission per genre, please.

If work was online on your own Facebook or blog, we don’t consider that as being previously published, but please note the info and whether it’s still online. We choose pieces based on artistic merit. We are a labor of love, and are unable to pay for pieces at this time.

The Mom Egg acquires first-time publication rights to the piece. We also reserve the right to republish it in a future electronic and/or print edition or anthology. Back issues are archived indefinitely. Rights return to the authors after publication: authors retain their copyright, so after their contribution has appeared in The Mom Egg, they may republish their text in any manner they wish—electronic or print—with acknowledgment of The Mom Egg as the original place of publication.
