Deadline August 31 | The Balnaves Foundation Indigenous Playwright's Award (Australia)

The Balnaves Foundation Indigenous Playwright’s Award is a $20,000 award for the creation of a new play by an Indigenous playwright.

This national award will be presented for the next three years. The award comprises $7,500 prize money and a $12,500 commission for a new play each year. Applications will be accepted from writers of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. They will be assessed by a panel including both Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists.

GUIDELINES

The Balnaves Foundation Indigenous Playwright’s Award is a $20,000 award for the creation of a new play by an Indigenous playwright.

CRITERIA
  • Applicants must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.
  • Writers may submit one application per round only.
DATES AND DEADLINES
  • 4 April 2012: Award applications open
  • 31 August 2012: Award applications close
  • October 2012: Shortlisted writers notified
  • December 2012: Award recipient announced
HOW TO APPLY

Applications must include:
  • The completed application form.
  • A current résumé.
  • An outline of a new play you would like to write. This should be no more than 5 pages
  • long. It’s likely that one of the judges will call you to discuss your pitch if you’ve been
  • shortlisted for the award.
And either:
  • A full length play or musical that you have written, OR
  • If you don’t have a play to send you can send a theatrical scene of at least 10 A4 pages and support material. Support material can be short plays, poetry, songs, prose or a DVD of work you have created (ie. comedy, devised work). We won’t accept examples of work you have acted in that you did not write yourself however. Support material is limited to 50 pages or 30 minutes.
ASSESSMENT
  • Applications will be assessed by a panel of both Belvoir and non-Belvoir staff members of Indigenous and non-Indigenous descent.
  • The panel for 2012 will include Belvoir’s Artistic Director, Associate Director - New Projects, and Literary Manager; Ilbijerri Theatre Company Artistic Director Rachael Maza and Queensland Theatre Company Artistic Director Wesley Enoch.
  • The full panel will decide the Award recipient.
OUTCOMES: The Award is valued at $20,000. The Award recipient will receive $7,500 on receipt of the Award. The further $12,500 will be received as a commission for a new Australian work. As a commission Belvoir will provide guidance, dramaturgical assistance and other forms of script development support.
