Call for Creative Writing/ Journalistic Pieces on Women's Rights: Right Now (Australia)

Right Now is looking for pitches or submissions on human rights issues in Australia. Specifically, we are looking for submissions that focus on the issue of Women’s Rights, our theme for September 2012. Here are some more specialised topics, to get your creative juices going:

  • Women’s over-representation in lower paid jobs
  • Women and children as casualties of war
  • Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, and Australia’s reservations
  • Indigenous women and family violence
  • Sterilisation procedures and disabled women
  • Inequality in sport
  • Equal pay
  • Obesity and women in the workplace
  • Women paid for informal surrogacy
  • Miss NAIDOC?
  • Children and beauty pageants
  • Pregnancy and employment
  • Maternity and health care in rural communities
  • NATO not negotiating with women groups in Afghanistan
  • Women serving in combat roles in the ADF
  • Women in prisons

The pieces must be original, engaging and insightful and should appeal to and be understood by a broad range of readers. We would appreciate a brief but detailed pitch outlining ideas before a piece is sent to us. The deadline for submissions is 14 September 2012.

Articles and opinion pieces will be between 800-1,000 words, however for features or interviews up to 2000 words is acceptable, upon negotiation.
