Job Opening: Development Writer for The Global Fund for Women (San Francisco)

The Development Writer is part of the Writing Team, a sub-team of the Donor Services and Development Teams and reports to the Grant Writing and Research Manager. The Development Writer is responsible for researching institutional donors and writing proposals, reports, concept notes, applications, briefings, and general overview and organizational pieces for institutional and individual donors. The Development Writer works closely with a peer writer located in the NY office and the Grant Writing and Research Manager to streamline and maintain effective processes for information gathering and grant writing.


Grant Writing

• Carry out full range of activities required to prepare, write, and submit grant proposals and reports to individual, foundation, corporate, and government sources, including, but not limited to:

- Writing and editing letters of intent, concept notes, and grant proposals for submission, including assembling all required documentation

- Writing, editing, and overseeing the completion and submission of reports on existing grants
- Ensuring fulfillment of donor grant restrictions and reporting preferences

- Keeping the team informed of grant writing activity, awards/declines, and grant reporting through regular updates and/or outputs

- Gathering information from the Program Team and Learning, Monitoring & Evaluation Sub-Team to articulate grantmaking trends, successes, challenges, and learnings

- Collaborating with the Communications Team to share and produce consistent language and visual content

- Collaborating with the Finance & Administration Team to prepare financial reports for donors

- Organizing, updating, and developing new writing resources for use by the whole Development team, including materials to support donor relationships and education, such as thematic and regional modules, statistical summaries, Power Points, etc., working closely with the other members of the Writing sub-team

- Researching and identifying prospective foundation and corporate funders

• Work with the Writing Team on creating and maintaining sub-team writing systems and processes, including but not limited to:

- Organizing and maintaining the template and boiler plate material folder, writing systems and processes, Contact Manager-Writer protocols and responsibilities

Additional Writing Support

• Support internal Development team writing needs, including, but not limited to:

- Editing proposals and reports for other team members

- Supporting the Annual Giving sub-team with their writing needs, including direct mail pieces

- Articulating Development trends for the Annual Report

Development Team

• Ensure donor and prospect data is properly recorded in the database and that all donor information is maintained with respect to confidentiality

• Maintain the integrity of donor relationships and the Global Fund for Women’s fundraising philosophy


• Participate in cross-team projects and assignments as appropriate

• Follow Global Fund policies and procedures, and contribute to institutional knowledge

• Handle ad hoc projects

• Represent the Development team in a positive way within the organization and in interactions with individuals and organizations external to the Global Fund


Internal Relationships

The Development Writer is a member of the Development team, under the supervision of the Grant Writing and Research Manager and working closely with other Development team members. Additionally, this position works with the Finance, Program, and Communications Teams.

External Relationships

The Development Writer represents the Global Fund to donors, potential donors, and other supporters. Additionally, this position may represent the organization at donor meetings, conferences, and events.



• Excellent writing and research skills

• Analytical, creative thinking, and able to translate programmatic content for donor and public audiences

• Detective skills that will enable combing through content to identify and present powerful images

• Knowledge of international development and women’s rights issues

• Strong understanding of global issues and sensitivity toward cultural, racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity

• Knowledge of fundraising strategies and procedures

• Ability to work independently, as a team member, and across teams

• Ability to handle a large volume of work, multi-task, and meet multiple deadlines

• Strong attention to detail

• Strong computer knowledge with Microsoft Office

• Strong commitment to women’s rights and the philosophy and goals of the Global Fund for Women

• Sensitivity and appreciation for diverse viewpoints and various communication styles


• Knowledge of grant application and reporting processes and demonstrated grant writing skills

• Skill with FileMaker, Raiser’s Edge, or other fundraising databases


• Two to four years of work experience, preferably in a non-profit setting

• Writing as a core job function in previous job positions and strong writing skills in academic programs

• BA/BS in the social sciences, expertise in international relations, development, and/or women’s studies

• Experience with Apple computers is preferred
